Training and education programming series

At the core of our training and education programming, we offer a two-part series to introduce people to the basics of sexuality and gender, terminology, and resources here at Hamline. The trainings are a sequential cohort model that builds from one workshop to the next. Starting with self-exploration, going deeper into terminology and identity, thinking about engaging others in your role on campus, understanding effective behaviors when advocating, developing tactics for bystander intervention, and developing how best to support and challenge others in conversations around sexualities and gender diversity. At the end of the training participants are offered an opportunity to join our Rainbow Inclusion Network.

Rainbow Inclusion Network

Staff, faculty, and student leaders can . Individuals displaying the Rainbow Inclusion Network pledge to be understanding, supportive, and trustworthy if a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, intersex, and asexual, or ally student or colleague needs advice, assistance, support or just someone with whom to talk.

The individuals below are committed to their own and others' education and development of LGBTQIA issues. Homophobic, biphobic and heterosexist, as well as transphobic and gender oppressive comments and actions will not be tolerated, but will be addressed in an educational, informative, and respectful manner. To honor and protect the privacy of community members, conversations and requests for support and/or assistance will be kept private.

StepUp! Bystander Training

Tuesday, September 17, 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and Wednesday. November 6, 4 to 5:30 p.m.  |  Anderson 304

StepUP! is Hamline's bystander program for students, staff, and faculty to build intervention and de-escalation skills for social conflict and violence. It provides opportunities to think inclusively in how we respond to concerns and interrupt unwelcome actions in our community. This workshop is an in-person single session recommended for all student leaders.

StepUP! teaches attendees to evaluate a situation and assess their capacity to determine the best and safest approach to bystander intervention. It isn't just for interrupting physical violence that you see on campus, but also for intervening in heated conversations, reacting to disclosures of assault from peers, and identifying discrimination in your community.

Want to learn more about being a bystander and build confidence in interrupting conflict? Learn some tools and skills to help step up more regularly with StepUP!
